A 3-ton road roller is a small compaction machine. Its working principle is based on the repeated loading of materials such as soil and asphalt by its own weight and vibration or impact energy. By overcoming the cohesion and internal friction between material particles, the particles are forced to rearrange, expelling gas and moisture, thus achieving compaction.
Depending on the compaction method, 3-ton road rollers can be divided into vibratory rollers, impact rollers, and pneumatic tire rollers. Vibratory rollers (such as those with a front steel wheel and rear rubber wheel design) use a hydraulic system to drive the eccentric blocks inside the steel wheel to rotate at high speed, generating periodic vibrations. The excitation force can reach 30kN, and the vibration frequency is about 50Hz, making the compacted layer more tightly interlocked with particles under dynamic action. Impact rollers utilize the periodic change of the center of gravity when dragged by non-circular impact wheels (such as triangular or pentagonal ones), converting gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy to impact the ground. A single impact energy can reach 20-50kJ, and the stress wave can penetrate 1-3 meters underground, making them suitable for deep compaction. Pneumatic tire rollers use pneumatic tires and an articulated frame. The material is uniformly compacted through the rubbing action of the tires, and a hydraulic transmission system provides power. Wide-base tires enhance the ground contact area and mobility. The compaction effect is closely related to the operating parameters. A 3-ton road roller can typically achieve a compaction degree of over 96%. The specific effect depends on the material properties (such as cohesive soil or sand) and operating parameters (such as speed and energy selection). For example, for cohesive soil, an impact energy of 20-30 kJ and a speed of 10 km/h are recommended, while for sand, 30-40 kJ and a speed of 12 km/h are needed. During operation, it is necessary to control the wheel track overlap (approximately 1/3) and the hydraulic oil temperature (35-65℃) to ensure uniform compaction and prevent overheating of the equipment.
