Proper maintenance of lead-acid batteries is critical to ensure stable performance, long service life, and safe operation of electric forklifts. Since forklift batteries operate under heavy loads and frequent charge–discharge cycles, correct daily care is especially important.
First, keep the battery and its compartment clean and dry. Dust, dirt, and electrolyte residue can create conductive paths that cause self-discharge and corrosion. Clean the battery surface regularly with a damp cloth, and ensure the battery tray is free of debris. Terminal connections should be clean, tight, and protected against corrosion to prevent power loss and overheating.
Second, regularly check electrolyte levels for flooded lead-acid batteries. The electrolyte must always cover the battery plates. If the level is low, add distilled or deionized water only, preferably after charging. Never use tap water or add acid, as impurities can damage the internal structure and significantly reduce battery life.
Third, follow correct charging practices. Always use a charger that matches the forklift battery’s voltage and capacity. Avoid overcharging and deep discharging, as both accelerate plate sulfation and shorten service life. Batteries should be recharged when the remaining capacity reaches about 20–30%, and opportunity charging should be done according to manufacturer recommendations. Charging must take place in a well-ventilated area to safely dissipate hydrogen gas.
Fourth, control operating temperature. Forklift lead-acid batteries perform best between 20°C and 30°C. High temperatures increase water loss and internal wear, while low temperatures reduce available capacity. Avoid exposing batteries to extreme heat or cold, and allow them to cool before charging after heavy operation.
Finally, conduct routine inspections. Check for loose cables, damaged insulation, leakage, or abnormal heating. Any battery showing swelling, strong odor, or uneven performance should be serviced or replaced promptly to prevent downtime and safety risks.
Consistent and correct maintenance improves forklift efficiency, extends battery lifespan, and ensures reliable warehouse operations.
